quick question re installation

Hey, this may seem like a stupid question, but if I format the hard disk Vista is on, and then re-install it, can I re-install it with the same product key and activate it again? I guess I'm a little confused about "activation", and whether or not re-installing it will work or not because it's already been activated. Thanks!
